Diabetes Diaries: Our Story

There is a crisis in the UK when it comes to type 2 diabetes. Our beloved NHS is under a constant overwhelming amount of pressure. Doctors and healthcare teams struggle to have sufficient time or resources to fully support those diagnosed with the condition.

Diabetes Lifestyle Doctors was born of a passion and need to help, created to help those with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes regain control of their condition.

Our founders, Amanda and Paul, have a longstanding desire to not only help those with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, but also have a particular interest in the power lifestyle changes can have on the condition.

Amanda first discovered her passion for diabetes while she was studying as a medical student and has continued to follow and utilise the advances in diabetes care research to make a positive impact on the health of individuals, families, and communities during her work as a GP. Paul, who credits doctors in Ghana for saving his father’s life after a battle with malaria for his interest in medicine, discovered his passion for the condition when he worked on an endocrinology/diabetes ward after qualifying as a doctor.

It was in New Zealand, where the couple practised for several years, that the pair realised the need for Diabetes Lifestyle Doctors back in the UK.

Amanda and Paul were both GPs running a rural GP practice in New Zealand, where Amanda was the Diabetes GP Lead.  The appointment time they were allotted for seeing patients was 15 minutes, rather than the 10 minutes the NHS usually provides. This may seem like a small window, but they quickly discovered how valuable a little extra time was for more holistic patient support and interaction.

From their time in New Zealand, they both began to appreciate the power of lifestyle. Working with Māori and South Pacific Island populations, who are often disproportionately affected by type 2 diabetes for multiple reasons, they saw first-hand the benefits optimising lifestyle factors can directly have on improving diabetes and metabolic health outcomes, which fuelled their interest in this area even further.

Upon their return to the UK, Diabetes Lifestyle Doctors was conceived, with the aim of helping people to proactively learn about effective and evidence-based lifestyle interventions. Step by step, the programme they have devised to support the NHS, enables patients to put these interventions into practice, facilitating positive behaviour change, greater understanding of the condition and overall empowerment.

Diabetes Lifestyle Doctors provides a holistic approach; it focusses on education and assisting long term sustainable behaviour change. It can be accessed directly from anywhere in the country, by anyone, including patients’ families and friends, without the need for referral.
